Palmer Woods Nature Preserve

Palmer Woods has become the premier trail system in our area with over 24 miles of purpose built mountain bike trails in the heart of Leelanau County.  It has amazing downhill flow trails embedded with fun features. Highlights include Lion's Mane, Fiddle Heads, Beech Drops, and Swallow Tail. Ursa Major and Ursa Minor will keep Beginner and Intermediate riders smiling.

The Commons in TC

The Commons behind Munson Hospital has been the local's in-town mtb playground for decades. While it has never been considered a sanctioned trail, that may soon change. There is a strong push in the community to officially recognize mountain bike trails in this area.  NMMBA is leading the way to build the first, of what we hope will be several new trails in the Commons.

Currently, the trails in the Commons are cranky and janky, with some rippin' downhills.  Enjoy...but use caution especially on the Copper Ridge side.

West Side Gravel

Looking to find some tasty gravel roads?  We are super stoked on the gravel roads just west of Traverse City.  Areas  starting in the Long Lake area and heading both west and south into Grand Traverse and Benzie County are littered with wonderful gravel roads, especially in the spring and fall.  You can also loop together a great mixed surface route (mostly gravel) through the The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

The VASA is the classic mountain bike trail system in the Traverse City area.  The VASA has been a labor of love for many local mountain bikers.  Built over many many years, it is a playground of hand built old school trails.  The marked singletrack is approximately 17 miles of fast singletrack appropriate for all levels of riders.  The gems are all the unmarked singletrack in the VASA land.  Group rides happen all summer long at the VASA.  Hooking up with a local's group ride is a great way to explore the hidden treasures.

VASA Land

The TART non profit organization has done a phenomenal job of developing a system of recreational trails in our region to create a super rideable city.  Two highlights  of this system are The Boardman Lake Loop Trail and The Leelanau Trail.

The Boardman  Lake Loop circles the Boardman Lake in the heart of TC.  It is a total of 4 miles.

The Leelanau Trail is an approximately 17 mile point to point trail that starts on the western edge of TC and goes to Suttons Bay.

Both trails are connected with the main TART Rec trail that works its way through TC west to east so you do not have to go on roads with motot vehicles.

TART  Recreation Trails
On the Pave'

The Road riding is ridiculously good in our area.  Get out of TC and you will find miles of stacked hills on relatively quiet rural roads.  Old Mission is a classic road ride in our area.  Leelanau County has miles upon miles of gorgeous paved roads.   Two samplers are on this page but there are really too many routes to put in one spot . If you enjoy the pavement, get out and explore.

Our Cycling Community Spotlight

Sugar Loaf

Wow,  Sugar Loaf, a long shuttered ski resort is roaring back to life!  New mountain bike trails are currently being built.  All machined built flow trails. The  Leelanau Conservancy is spear heading the development at the 'Loaf.

Civic Center Pump Track

Norte spearheaded the initiative to build a fantastic new pump track at the Civic Center.  What a fantastic new addition to the cycling infrastructure in TC.
